These posts are meditations in constraint. Resources are limited, especially time. Work, family and the maintenance requirements of life frequently leave room for little else. So what are we to do with our neglected aspirations?
In these posts, I plan to chronicle my attempts at motor pattern change and golf skill development from the perspective of someone who spends very little time at the golf course. For clarity, this is not an attempt to "become scratch" or "chase scratch". Scratch handicap golf requires the development of multiple skills and requires time on the course. Chipping, putting, bunker shots, distance wedge play, course management, etc. We do not have time to develop proficiency in multiple phases of the game and test it each week on the golf course.
What we do have, is the time to pursue improvement in one phase of the game. The full swing motion. Improvement in the full swing will directly impact our ability to drive the golf ball and approach the green. These two categories of shots represent over two-thirds of our ability to score. We will pursue these changes primarily in the comfort of our own backyards. A net, astroturf mat and video camera will be our primary tools. Our aim is to hit more flushers. To compress the golf ball. To have a sound at impact that makes bystanders turn their head. To have a stable clubface from hip high to hip high that allows us to keep the golf ball on the planet regardless of the pressure. These are the results we after.
